    Holomorphic extension of smooth CR-mappings between real-analytic and real-algebraic CR-manifolds

    Full text link
    We establish results on holomorphic extension of CR-mappings of class C∞C^\infty between a real-analytic CR-submanifold of \C^N and a real-algebraic CR-submanifold of \C^{N'}

    Detectability of f-mode Unstable Neutron Stars by the Schenberg Spherical Antenna

    Full text link
    The Brazilian spherical antenna (Schenberg) is planned to detect high frequency gravitational waves (GWs) ranging from 3.0 kHz to 3.4 kHz. There is a host of astrophysical sources capable of being detected by the Brazilian antenna, namely: core collapse in supernova events; (proto)neutron stars undergoing hydrodynamical instability; f-mode unstable neutron stars, caused by quakes and oscillations; excitation of the first quadrupole normal mode of 4-9 solar mass black holes; coalescence of neutron stars and/or black holes; exotic sources such as bosonic or strange matter stars rotating at 1.6 kHz; and inspiralling of mini black hole binaries. We here address our study in particular to the neutron stars, which could well become f-mode unstable producing therefore GWs. We estimate, for this particular source of GWs, the event rates that in principle can be detected by Schenberg and by the Dutch Mini-Grail antenna.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; Classical and Quantum Gravity (in press

    Holographic Complexity and Fidelity Susceptibility as Holographic Information Dual to Different Volumes in AdS

    The holographic complexity and fidelity susceptibility have been defined as new quantities dual to different volumes in AdS. In this paper, we will use these new proposals to calculate both of these quantities for a variety of interesting deformations of AdS. We obtain the holographic complexity and fidelity susceptibility for an AdS black hole, Janus solution and a solution with cylindrically symmetry, an inhomogeneous background and a hyperscaling violating background. It is observed that the holographic complexity depends on the size of the subsystem for all these solutions and the fidelity susceptibility does not have any such dependence.Comment: Slighly updated version. On the existence of chaotic circumferential waves in spinning disks

    Full text link
    We use a third-order perturbation theory and Melnikov's method to prove the existence of chaos in spinning circular disks subject to a lateral point load. We show that the emergence of transverse homoclinic and heteroclinic points respectively lead to a random reversal in the traveling direction of circumferential waves and a random phase shift of magnitude π\pi for both forward and backward wave components. These long-term phenomena occur in imperfect low-speed disks sufficiently far from fundamental resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to appear in CHAOS (Volume 17, Issue 2, June 2007

    Correction of neglected post-burn severe calcaneo-valgus deformity of foot with Joshi’s external stabilization system: a one stage surgical procedure

    Get PDF
    Post burn calcaneovalgus is a complex foot deformity and management becomes increasingly difficult especially if deformity is neglected in growing young child resulting in secondary bony deformity. A simple technique of single stage surgical correction with Joshi’s external stabilization system (JESS) is described using principle of distraction osteogenesis or histogenesis without need of extensive plastic surgical procedure. A functional plantigrade foot is achieved after completion of the procedure without need of any bony procedure and least chances of any neurovascular compromise. JESS is a versatile external fixation device for correction of neglected postburn complex calcaneovalgus deformity

    Confronting the opioid crisis: Practical pain management and strategies: AOA 2018 critical issues symposium

    Get PDF
    The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis. Clinicians have been part of the problem because of overprescribing of narcotics for perioperative pain management. Clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology and science of addiction to improve perioperative management of pain for their patients. Multiple modalities for pain management exist that decrease the use of narcotics. Physical strategies, cognitive strategies, and multimodal medication can all provide improved pain relief and decrease the use of narcotics. National medical societies are developing clinical practice guidelines for pain management that incorporate multimodal strategies and multimodal medication. Changes to policy that improve provider education, access to naloxone, and treatment for addiction can decrease narcotic misuse and the risk of addiction
